My Thoughts on... Edgar Allan Poe
For this blog post I wanted to talk about my thoughts on Poe's work, along with my favorite poems of his.
Poe's Work: I think that Edgar Allan Poe has some of the darkest and creepiest work that I have ever read. I personally do not like his work because of that. I realize that this is not a popular opinion. Most people who are studying to get an English degree love Poe and his twisted thoughts. Don't get me wrong, think his writing is poetic and fluid in a beautiful way, but the subject matter is where I get a little shiver down my spine. I have never been one to like the creepy or the dark parts of the mind. I have always been one to enjoy sweet and beautiful poetry written to a loved one or explaining nature. Though I do know that Poe writes poems that I would like, the underlying tone of death and or some sort of creepy thought is present still.
My Favorite Poems:
1. To F--S S. O--D: This poem to me was a beautiful piece of work from Poe. To me this poem is a simple explanation of what it would be like to be loved by someone. The poetic beauty and simple truth to the way that love would be if one had the chance to have it is amazing. I love the way that love is expressed in this poem and I think that it shows the softer side of Poe's writing. It gave me a second perspective of him, and not just his creepy and scary usual writing style.
2. To My Mother: This poem in my opinion was nice and beautiful with a small mix of sadness with death. Although this story had more of the classic Poe creepy undertones, I think that this poem has a beauty that goes beyond the content and stays within the words. The words Poe uses to describe the impact that this mother figure had on his life shows the importance of this woman in his life. The importance of this figure can also come from his being so incredibly upset about her being taken from him.
Overall, Poe is not my favorite poet because of his content, but his fluidity and the poetic beauty that he produces makes me love his work as a writer. I have very mixed feelings about Poe, but his work still seems to amaze me in different ways all of the time.
